C. B. Utility Co. is a Family Business that began with an immigrant’s journey to America. Four generations later, the company continues to set the standard for excellence and reliability in major utility construction projects.
Ceasar Brito was born in 1902 in St. Vincente, Cape Verde, and immigrated to the USA at the age of 3. He began his working career at Cranston Worsted Mill, continued on to become a fireman, and eventually a Master Electrician at Bristol Manufacturing Corp. in the town that would become his home.
The family landscaping business began using their bulldozer to build housing foundations, which gradually expanded into a reputation for trenching. The business was serendipitously subcontracted to begin excavating for gas work in Rhode Island, marking their foray into utility construction. In the 1980’s, the Britos expanded their brand to include C. B. Utility Company, Inc.
In the early 1920’s, he founded C. Brito and Son Landscaping Co. and purchased his first piece of construction equipment, a bulldozer. C. Brito Construction Co. was established in 1942, and Ceasar was joined by his son Joseph Brito after his return from military service in 1946.
Following in his father’s footsteps, Joseph Brito Jr. worked in the field as an operator before moving into a management role. Joe grew the company with an emphasis on safety. Known for their quick response to contract work, Joe positioned C. B. Utility Company to become the go-to contractor for emergency utility work.
Joseph Jr.’s son, Christopher Brito, began working at the company in his early teenage years. In high school and after graduation from Roger Williams University, he grew his knowledge by working as a laborer and later, a superintendent. Chris became Vice President of the companies in 2017. Today, Joe and Chris carry the company’s legacy and expert reputation while expanding the company’s repertoire to meet the demands of today’s complex infrastructure challenges.
Together, they represent four generations of experience which worked to develop C. B. Utility into one of the largest and most impactful utility contracting firms in New England and the Northeast.
